Belief in all Prophets or Messengers of God is a fundamental principle of Islam. A prophet or Messenger is a person chosen by Allah(God) for the reformation and guidance of mankind.

The Holy Qur’an uses two Arabic words for a prophet: Rasool and Nabi.
A Rasool is the appointed Messenger of Allah, honored by Allah with a new Shariah or Law (Holy Books.)

A nabi is also an appointed Messenger of Allah, but confirms, follows, and guides mankind to follow the Shariah or Law (Holy Book) brought by the Rasool before him.

A Rasool is higher in rank than a Nabi. A Prophet or Messenger  is always a Nabi by birth, but a prophet or Messenger  becomes a Rasool when he officially receives the post and declares it.

In other words, we can say that every messenger or prophet is born as a Nabi. However, not all can reach the rank of Rasool.

Muslims believe that while previous prophets or messengers were sent to a particular nation, tribe or people, the Holy Prophet Muhammad, may peace an blessing of Allah be upon him, was sent by God Almighty for all of mankind with the message of Islam.
