THE OTHER SALAH OR PRAYER THAT ARE NOT CONNECTED TO THE 5 DAILY OBLIGATORY PRAYERS:
In addition to the Fard (compulsory)  5 Daily Salah, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH), offered many different Salah (Prayers) at different times for different occasions throughout his life.


The following are the category of Salah classified by obligation as follows-:


1. Fard: Is compulsory. 
​2. Wajib: Is Obligatory (the obligation is a bit less than Fardh). 
​​​​3. Sunnah: are those salah that our Prophet (PBUH) performed regularly other than the compulsory (fardh) and wajib (obligatory) prayers. The following are the two types of Sunnah Salah.
(a) Sunnah Mu'akkadah – Constant practice of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He used to observe this Salah daily and regularly without fail and had encouraged his followers to do so. 
(b) Sunnah Ghair Mu'akkadah – Practice of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) but there may be occasions when it was left out without any excuse. 
4. Nafl: A voluntary Salah to earn more rewards from Allah SWT and for upliftment of one's soul.classified by obligation as follows-:

1. The Fard Salah are of two types

  • Fard Al-ain - The 5 Daily Salah including Jummah Salah This is an individual duty. (See Salah Chart)
  • Fard Kifaaya - Janaazah Salah (Funeral Prayer) This Salah is a collective obligation  which should be performed by all those who are present at the time. 


2. WAJIB SALAH – Is an obligatory Salah which comes next in rank to the Fard Al-Ain Salah.

  • WITR – Witr Salah is performed after the Isha Salah (Night Time Salah ) . (See Salah Chart)

  • EID – Eid Salah is  performed on the morning of the muslim festivals i.e. Eid ul-Fitr and Eid ul-Adha. It comprises of two raka’at, with seven takbirs offered before the start of the first raka’ah and five before the second. The sermon (kutbah) is offered after the Salah is completed. It must be offered between the time period of sunrise and true noon i.e. Fajr and Dhuhr.


3. SUNNAH SALAH – are those salah that  Prophet (PBUH) performed regularly other than the compulsory (fardh) and wajib (obligatory) Salah. The following are the two types of Sunnah Salah. (See Salah Chart)

(a) Sunnah Mu'akkadah – Constant practice of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH). He used to observe this Salah daily and regularly without fail and had encouraged his followers to do so. 

  • BEFORE AND AFTER THE 5 DAILY FARD SALAH – The Prophet Muhammad SAW performed voluntary rakahs added to the prescribed numbers of rakahs for each of the 5 daily prayers, and these are 12 in total and falls into the 2 Catergory of Sunnah Salah. See Salah Chart.


(b) Sunnah Ghair Mu'akkadah – Practice of Prophet Muhammad(PBUH) but there may be occasions when it was left out without any excuse. 

  • BEFORE THE 5 DAILY FARD SALAH – The Prophet Muhammad SAW performed voluntary rakahs added to the prescribed numbers of rakahs for each of the 5 daily prayers, and these are 12 in total and falls into the 2 Catergory of Sunnah Salah. See Salah Chart.(See Salah Chart)
  • ISTIKHAARAH – Salah al-Istikhaarah is a 2 rakah prayer performed to ask Allah SWT for guidance on a particular matter. A dua should be said after the prayer which is called Istikhaarah.

  • TAHAJJUD – Tahajjud Salah  is recommended to be prayed after waking from sleep during the later hours of the night until  Fajr.

  • TARAWIH – this prayer can be done only during the fasting month of Ramadan. This prayer can be done alone, in a group, at home, or in a mosque or other public meeting area. The total number of raka’ah varies, but with a minimum of eight.
  • KUSUF &  KHUSUF- (Solar and Lunar Eclipse) This Salah consists  of 2 rak'ah but each rak'ah has two ruku' instead of one. Before each ruku' there is a long recitation (Al-Fatihah + some other portion of Qur'an). The salah should last as long as the eclipse as much as possible.

4. NAFL PRAYERS – Nafl salah are optional prayers. They are performed to earned more reward from Allah SWT.

  • AFTER THE 5 DAILY FARD SALAH - to earn more rewards from Allah SWT and for upliftment of one's soul. (See Salah Chart)
  • ISHRAQ PRAYER – This prayer is performed after sunrise and consists of two Raka’ahs.

  • DUHA PRAYER-  Is performed after the sun has risen high in the morning, after about one-third of the day has passed. 

  • TAHIYATUL MASJID – This is a highly recommended prayer consisting of two Raka’ahs and performed when first entering a mosque as a way of greeting the place of worship.
  • JOURNEY PRAYER - When a person is about to travel, and also when they return from traveling, it is considered beneficial to pray two Raka’ahs.
  • KHAWF – This is a type of prayer that is prayed during time of fear. it was performed by the Prophet SAW in the Battle of Uhud.
