Before a Muslim performs Salah, he/she must ensure that the following requirements are attended to and are fulfilled.

  • Purity of the  body- The body must be cleansed of all impurities. Purity can be achieved through Ghusl or Wudhu. If a Muslim cannot perform Ghusl or Wudhu due to illness,  no water or other reasons, he/she can perform Tayammum (purification with dust) before performing Salah.

  • Cleanliness of Clothes- All clothing should be clean.

  • Cleanliness of Place the Salah is performed- The area where an individual stands for Salah and where the knees, hands, forehead and forearm would rest, must be freee of all impurities.

  • Covering of the  Awrah-

          - Males must cover the body from the navel to just below the knees (this is the minimum requirement                         to perform Salah) However, it is preferable that a code of dress be observed at all times.

          - Females are required to cover the whole body excluding the face, hands (from wrist to fingertips and feet                (below the ankles)

  • Facing the Kabaa- A believer must perform every Salah with his face turned toward the direction of the Holy Kabaa.

  • Punctuality of Salah- Each Salah must be performed within the time limit prescribed.

  • Niyah or Intention- Before performing Salah a Muslim should make intention (in his/her mind or expressed silently)
