Fasting or sawm is the third of the five Pillars of Islam, sawm is an arabic word (derived from a Syriac term meaning “to abstain”) also commonly known as rozah  in some countries. Fasting (Sawm) commemorates the revelation of the Holy Quran to humanity during the Holy month  the ninth month of the Islamic year known as Ramadan.

When fasting, Muslims are required to abstain from food, beverages (including water), and sexual intercourse during daylight hours (from dawn to sunset). Fasting is compulsory for every sane adult,  Muslim during the month of Ramadan.  Exceptions are made for travelers, soldiers, menstruating women, and the ill, although such persons are expected to fast later when they become able to do so.
