Tayammum is another form of purification. It is a substitute method of purifying oneself if one cannot perform Wudu or Ghusl.

  1. Make Niyyah/ Intention to perform Tayammum
  2. Then Say "Bismillah al Rahaman al Rahim"
  3.  Open both hands and strike them gently on pure dust or pure sand or clean dirt
  4. Then shake off or blow off any extra dust, dirt or sand if there is any.
  5. Then wipe the entire face with both hands (Once)
  6. Strike the open hands on pure dust, sand or dirt again as before and take the left hand and rub the right hand and forearm from finger tips to elbow (Once)
  7. Then take the right hand and rub the left hand and forearm from finger tips to elbow (Once)
  8. Recite Dua after Tayammum " Ash- hadu al laa ilaah illal laahu wah dahuu laa shareeka lahuu wa ash hadu an-na Muhammadan 'abduhuu wa rasuuluh"

One Can perform Tyammum when

  • Water is not available or there is difficulty in obtaining water due to distance, danger or hardship.
  • When there is a shortage of water supply and using for Ghusl or Wudu would totally deplete the water for drinking, cooking or other useful domestic purposes.
  • When a person is sick and using water could be harmful to the person's health

Factors that break or nullify Tayammum are as follows-:

  • When water becomes available
  • When a sick person can use water without endangering his/her health
  • Everything that breaks nullifies or breaks Wudhu or Ghusl

  • If one is wearing a watch, bangles, ring etc. one should remove it and rub the skin with dust.
  • If pure dust, sand or clean dirt is not available you can strike your hand on an unpainted wall of mud, stone or brick to perform Tayammum
